    IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor
The IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor is designed to automatically adjust the air/fuel ratio when the air filter becomes restricted or partially clogged and maintains the engine’s correct RPM. IntelliCarb™ uses air from the clean side of the air filter to control the diaphragm and flow of fuel. As the air filter becomes dirty and less air is available for the carburetor, the IntelliCarb™ system adjusts the fuel flow to compensate for the decrease in air flow. This is in contrast to typical carburetors that utilize this air from the “dirty” side of the air box.

    Ematic™ Lubrication System
The Ematic™ guide bar, when used with STIHL OILOMATIC® saw chain, will provide proper lubrication and less oil consumption than conventional methods. The system works because two ramps, strategically placed in the guide bar rail, help contain the flow of oil and direct all lubrication to the sliding faces of the bar and chain links as well as the rivets and driver holes, which in turn can reduce bar oil consumption up to 50%.

MS 170 is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 784.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great saw for light work around the house. Starts easy, very light and easy to handle. This saw is perfect for occasional tree trimming and light work around the yard. It starts very easily, and is light enough to hold above your head to trim higher branches from trees. I have also used this little saw to cut down a large Bradford Pear in my neighbor’s yard! Great little saw!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent saw This is one excellent smaller sized chainsaw. It seems to be a little cold natured to start but once it warms up it does a fine job for my needs.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Poor starting Nice light saw, but starting is not easy and appears carburetion is not correct especially when entering a cut. Also not enough room for the hand between handle and break

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little chainsaw! I bought a Stihl 031 saw in the late 70’s and used that saw for almost 40 years. At that point, it was in need of significant repairs. At the same time, I was no longer in need of a workhorse saw like the 031 had been, so I settled for the lighter and easier for me to handle 170. I have been amazed at how well the 170 runs and cuts! It starts easily and has been capable of any job I have needed it for, from clearing deadfall to cutting firewood. I was afraid I might be disappointed in the smaller saw. On the contrary, I have been thrilled!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good value saw I recently purchased this saw after reading numerous reviews, both pro and con. I asked the shop owner about the starting problems, the most common complaint, associated with this saw. She explained a very stringent procedure for starting the saw. She said all new small engines have a tendency to flood if the manufacturer's instructions are not followed - and Sthil has a very comprehensive manual. It begins with using good gas (premium/93 octane). This is something I learned to do with all my small engines, including my outboard motor. The higher octane fuel contains less ethanol. Non-ethanol fuel is available in some areas and is the best alternative.Next is that the saw will not start on full choke, only burp. This should take about 3 pulls. Once it burps, move the choke to 1/2 and they motor should start by the 3rd pull. Once warmed there is no need to choke.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to operate and maintain Have been very pleased with the saw ever since I purchased it. It starts easy, has good power and is light enough to move around to trim limbs without overly tiring you out. For me the 14" bar is just right.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just right for limbing out a felled tree. I have used this saw to cut down some of the many smaller diameter dead ash trees that we have as well as to limb out a large oak tree. Has exceeded my expectations for the price I paid. Why pay the same price or higher at a big box store when you can get a comparable (or better) saw from a local dealer who knows the product and is there in the future to take care of you?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light Weight, reliable I've had a 20" saw (not a Stihl) for 35 years. It still works well but that old saw isn't getting any lighter and I'm not getting any younger. I bought the Stihl on the dealer's recommendation and because of its light weight and compact size. My only regret is that I didn't buy it years ago. It starts easily, when you follow the instructions. Be careful not to over choke and flood the engine. I've had the saw for two years and have had no starting problems. I once made the mistake of using two year old fuel. The saw started easily and ran well, but hesitated on accelerating and smoked like a mosquito fogger. I replaced the fuel and it ran like new. Don't use old fuel, you may not be as luck as I was. It has plenty of power for the narrow, relatively short chain. It will go through a 12" oak log easily and is easy to maneuver. I like it so much I bought one for my son. He too has had great service. You can't go wrong with this saw!
